Remember to Get a Flu Shot

It would be ideal if our body’s immune system strengthened with age, but unfortunately studies have shown the opposite to be true. As people age, their immune system weakens, making them more susceptible to the flu.

In most cases the flu can be overcome within a few days or weeks, it can lead to more serious consequences such as pneumonia, bronchitis and even death. The flu sends thousands of people to the hospital every year and more than half of the hospitalizations are seniors 65 and older according to www.flu.gov.

Due to changes to the influenza virus every year it is recommended that the youth and seniors get the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available because they are most at risk. Understand that flu shots don’t prevent the common cold and they also don’t cause the flu. Flu shots are formulated with killed virus, so it is impossible for it to cause the virus.

It is important that every senior get his or her seasonal flu shot to protect you and family from spreading the virus, which can trigger pneumonia and possible death. No one at any age is immune to flu related deaths, but it is most deadly amongst seniors. An even scarier statistic is that 90% of flu related deaths occur in people age 65 and older.

I've read a recent article stating that the flu shot may lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes and even death. The Journal of the American Medical Association report shows evidence of this http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1758749.

Hello John, We appreciate your feedback and will look into the report. We have heard that flu shots can help protect the heart, but its always nice to have evidence to back up the recommendations.
