It’s the beginning of the year, so now is the time to schedule your annual “Wellness visit”. The Affordable Care Act created new prevention and wellness benefits for all Medicare patients. One of these new provisions is the once-a-year “Wellness” visit, but this is not what you or your doctors think of as an annual exam.
A wellness visit is not a physical; it is more like the introductory "Welcome to Medicare" visit. The first year a patient is enrolled in Medicare they are eligible for a once in a lifetime "Welcome to Medicare" visit, which includes a review of your medical and social history along with preventive service counseling and screenings.
The Wellness visit
is an opportunity for a patient and doctor to spend an appropriate amount of time discussing a patient's health care goals along with developing a plan, which reduces disease and serious accidents and is covered on an annual basis. The wellness plan can include proper diet, acceptable levels of exercise and elimination of bad habits.
All Medicare Beneficiaries are eligible
How much does it Cost?
Your annual Wellness visit cost you nothing and the Part B
deductible does not apply as long as you are a Medicare beneficiary and your doctor or other qualified health care provider accepts assignment.
It is important to understand that if additional tests are performed during the same visit that isn’t covered the Part B deductible may apply along with a coinsurance charge.
